A Legacy of Historical Excellence
In Vishnu Shastri Khande's words, V.K. Rajwade was one of the foundational pillars of Marathi historical research. Born on June 19, 1863, in Pune, Rajwade dedicated his life to the study of history, earning the title of 'Itihasacharya' (Master Historian). His lifelong commitment to uncovering the lesser-known chapters of Marathi history has left an indelible mark on the field.
Through the establishment of the 'Bharat Itihas Sanshodhak Mandal,' Rajwade worked tirelessly to reveal untold stories of the past. His editorial work on the 22 volumes of 'Marathi Itihasache Sadhane' (Sources of Marathi History) provided detailed accounts of significant historical events and documents. Additionally, he has written extensively on subjects like 'The Contribution to India's Freedom Movement' and 'The Rise of the Maratha Empire,' offering profound insights into these pivotal periods of history.
As a lasting tribute to his immense contribution, a bust of V.K. Rajwade adorns the entrance of the Bharat Itihas Sanshodhak Mandal. This bust stands as a symbol of respect and recognition for his role as the founder and visionary behind the institution, serving as a reminder of his invaluable legacy to all who enter.
In March 1926, due to some disagreements, Rajwade left Pune and established a new institution in Dhule under the name 'Rajwade Sanshodhan Mandir.' However, the Pune-based Mandal continued its mission to assist research and promote historical studies. It received substantial support from the general public and scholars in the form of donations of books and documents. Rajwade’s disciples, Dattopant Waman Potdar, Ganesh Hari Khare, and Vasudev Sitaram Bendre, are recognized for playing significant roles in the Mandal's activitie.
